Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi says Square Enix has not yet finalized whether the game, due out early in 2027, will get a physical release. Speaking to GamesRadar+ at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin, Hamaguchi said the company is "still having internal discussions on what the exact SKU product lineup is going to be for Revelation," adding, "I can't say anything particularly definitive at this point in time. But I am working to make the arrangements to allow us to have some kind of physical edition."
The question comes amid a broader industry shift away from physical media. Sony has said it plans to end new PlayStation disc production in 2028 — a year after Revelation's planned launch — and Rockstar's upcoming GTA 6 has drawn attention for reportedly shipping as a code-in-a-box rather than a full disc release. Hamaguchi acknowledged this trend, saying that as both a developer and a fan, "the general trend is for things to shift away from physical towards downloadable games."
Despite that trend, Hamaguchi expressed personal attachment to physical media, citing experiences at fan events. "I really think that people bringing up things, asking for autographs — I think that's lovely," he said. "I think it's a wonderful culture and it would be a shame to lose that. I want that to remain." He predicted that some form of physical or packaged edition will likely persist even if digital downloads become dominant, suggesting possibilities like "a box with the code inside it," key cards similar to Nintendo's approach, or a boot disc.
Hamaguchi noted that format decisions depend on platform-specific rules, including storage limits on key cards and disc capacity restrictions across different first-party systems. He said these constraints are actively being weighed as Square Enix determines what format best suits Revelation. He closed by saying he hopes for "something that is as close as possible to what players and fans are going to want," but said further details would have to wait for future announcements. He also joked that if physical plans fall through after this interview, fans "are going to rip me to pieces."
The first two entries in the remake trilogy, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, both received true disc-based physical editions, including a three-disc PS5 bundle combining both games. That track record leaves open the possibility that a complete physical edition of the trilogy could still arrive later, even if Revelation itself launches without one.
Separately, Hamaguchi also discussed an unrelated crossover: Final Fantasy 14's upcoming Evercold expansion will feature a Final Fantasy 7-themed raid series, developed with input from original FF7 writer Kazushige Nojima and character designer Tetsuya Nomura. Hamaguchi said the collaboration stemmed from realizing that Evercold and Revelation were releasing around the same time, prompting discussions with FF14 director Naoki Yoshida about combining efforts to build excitement across the franchise.
