A leaker going by the name Cyberleek began posting near-daily Grand Theft Auto 6 footage this week, including what appeared to be a full map reveal and, in a later leak, what looked like access to a playable build of the game. Cyberleek has said it will continue leaking unless Take-Two abandons its digital-only release plan and prints physical discs instead.
Take-Two has responded by filing subpoenas seeking records from Microsoft and Discord in an effort to identify the leaker, according to Kotaku and GamesRadar+. Rockstar has also issued DMCA takedowns, but as of the reporting, the company had not identified who is behind the leaks. Bloomberg, as cited by PC Gamer and Kotaku, reported that some Rockstar employees are frustrated the leaks happened despite stricter security measures—including the end of remote work—put in place after a 2022 breach. Kotaku reported that Rockstar has gone silent on its usual social media posts about GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption Online while investigating.
Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet posted on social media that the company is 'working closely with Take-Two and Rockstar Games to support efforts to protect creative works and intellectual property,' according to GamesRadar+. The statement did not explicitly confirm the leaks or detail Xbox's role, though GamesRadar+ noted it likely relates to the Microsoft subpoena.
Cyberleek has also opened a website offering advertising space and 'custom-made gameplay footage tailored to specific brands,' including sexual content, in exchange for a payment of 400 Monero—reported by PC Gamer and GamesRadar+ as worth roughly $164,000–$165,000. A separate Kotaku report cited a GTAForums user's analysis claiming Cyberleek created its own cryptocurrency, $CYBERLEEK, and has been profiting from transaction fees generated by trades of the token, raising doubts about the leaker's stated motive of protecting consumer rights. The same analysis suggested the leaker's crypto wallet could potentially be traced through exchange records, similar to the subpoenas already targeting Discord and Microsoft.
Despite the leaks, Bloomberg reported—as relayed by GamesRadar+ and Kotaku—that Rockstar does not plan to change its August 27 Netflix-exclusive extended gameplay reveal or other marketing plans. An internal message reportedly reassured staff that Cyberleek's actions haven't devalued their work. GTA 6 remains on track for a November 19 release and, according to GamesRadar+, has already generated an 'unprecedented' number of preorders.
Separately, Polygon reported that the absence of leaked footage featuring co-protagonist Lucia Caminos has fueled misinformation among fans, including a fake Telegram group that falsely claimed to have full game access and circulated an AI-generated image after promising footage of Lucia.
