Several platforms refreshed their libraries this weekend. On HBO Max, 'The Drama' pairs Robert Pattinson and Zendaya in a dark comedy about a man who learns a shocking secret about his fiancée's past just before their wedding. Hulu added 'The Devil Wears Prada 2,' bringing back Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci as Andy returns to Runway magazine to help save it from financial trouble, twenty years after the original film. Peacock picked up 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,' the animated sequel following the 2023 hit, featuring Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy and Brie Larson as a new princess named Rosalina who squares off against Bowser Jr.
Prime Video added over 50 new movies for August, including the Oscar-nominated drama 'Women Talking,' based on Miriam Toews' novel about Mennonite women deciding how to respond to abuse in their community, with performances from Claire Foy and Rooney Mara. Also newly available on Prime Video are the Coen brothers' black comedy 'Fargo,' starring Frances McDormand as a Midwest police chief, and Ice Cube's 2002 comedy 'Barbershop.' For those wanting something campier, 'SOULM8TE,' an 'M3GAN' spin-off starring Lily Sullivan as a rogue AI android opposite David Rysdahl's grieving widower, is now available on premium video on-demand.
On the TV side, Prime Video is also highlighting three shows worth catching up on: the action-comedy 'Ride or Die,' starring Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham as friends whose bond is tested when one turns out to be a trained assassin (holding a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score); the animated noir series 'Batman: Caped Crusader' season 2, which brings Hamish Linklater's Bruce Wayne up against Rupert Thorne, the Riddler, Scarecrow and the Joker; and all seven seasons of 'Gilmore Girls,' which moved to Prime Video on July 1.
Netflix's new arrivals include 'The Bombing of Pan Am 103,' a six-episode British miniseries dramatizing the 1988 bombing that killed 270 people and remains the deadliest terrorist attack on British soil, starring Connor Swindells, Patrick J. Adams and Merritt Wever. Also new is 'Final Project,' a Mexican micro-thriller told in 7-to-10-minute episodes about a bullied transfer student, and the return of 'Hannibal,' the acclaimed psychological thriller starring Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy, back on Netflix five years after its previous streaming license expired, holding a 93% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
Netflix also has three movie recommendations built around strong female leads: 'A Private Life,' a mystery thriller with Jodie Foster performing in fluent French as a psychiatrist investigating a client's death, which earned Foster a Lumière Award nomination; the original 1996 'Scream,' starring Neve Campbell, newly added along with its sequel; and 'Tár,' the 2022 psychological drama featuring Cate Blanchett as a renowned orchestra conductor facing a fall from grace.
Hulu rounded out the weekend with three shows to binge: 'Ride or Die'-adjacent reality series aside, Hulu added season 7 of '90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way,' following six couples as Americans relocate abroad, including fan favorites Jenny and Sumit in India; all five seasons of the procedural 'Private Eyes,' starring Jason Priestley and Cindy Sampson as a former hockey player and private investigator solving cases in Toronto; and two seasons of 'Kids Baking Championship,' a competition series for young bakers hosted by Duff Goldman and Valerie Bertinelli, with a $25,000 grand prize for the winner.
