Double Fine Productions was a subsidiary of Xbox Game Studios from June 2019 to July 2026. Last month, new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced plans to divest from five studios, including Double Fine, writing on Xbox Wire that "it is neither possible nor desirable to own every great independent studio." In the weeks that followed, Double Fine laid off 23 developers, but the studio has since regained the rights to all of its intellectual property and is now charting an independent path forward.

This month also marks the fifth anniversary of Psychonauts 2, a game whose existence was tied to Xbox funding that allowed Double Fine to finish it. According to a Polygon retrospective, the game's strongest elements are its writing and world design, including features like surrealist, disturbingly realistic tooth-shaped platforms and grind rails in a level called Compton's Cook-Off that create a stressful, looping feeling matching its character's mental state. The piece argues that Psychonauts 2 represents a creative approach to big-budget games that both Xbox and Sony have largely moved away from, contrasting it with what it describes as PlayStation's recent focus on similar over-the-shoulder action games from studios like Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, and Insomniac, with Astro Bot cited as an exception.

The retrospective also pointed to other examples of creativity in the industry, including South of Midnight winning awards, Donkey Kong Bananza selling nearly 5 million copies despite the franchise historically underselling compared to other Nintendo series, and Fuse Games' upcoming Star Wars Galactic Racer, which blends arcade-style racing with roguelike elements and a mechanic where crashing ends a player's career with no rewind option. The piece frames Xbox's divestment from Double Fine as a shortsighted decision given the studio's track record of inventive design.

Despite the anniversary, Double Fine is not currently working on a sequel to Brütal Legend. During an August 21 appearance on Kinda Funny Games Daily, Tim Schafer was asked directly about a potential Brütal Legend 2 and responded, "We're not working on that now. But maybe someday. I mean, there's a lot there to work with. But we just, right now, we're going to make a whole bunch of crazy little weird things."

When a viewer noted that heavy metal icons Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy Kilmister, who inspired characters in the original game, had died, Schafer said he believes there is still room to feature new artists in a potential sequel. He noted that while the studio lost Ozzy and Lemmy, musicians like Rob Halford and Lita Ford are still around, and that people continue to introduce him to new metal bands. For now, Double Fine's near-term plans include updates for Kiln and the Amnesia Fortnight 2026 - Indie Reboot Kickstarter, which will fund a game jam and documentary; one game from that jam is expected to become an officially released title, potentially the first since the studio's split from Xbox Game Studios.
