For publishers
What a source gets from RevealedNews, and how we handle its reporting.
What we are
RevealedNews writes multi-source summaries of news in games, hardware, entertainment and business. Each story is drafted by AI from the coverage of several outlets and checked automatically against those sources before it is published. How that works is on the About page.
Attribution and links
Every story we publish lists each source it draws on by outlet name and links to the original article. Those links go through our own /go address, which counts the click and then sends the reader straight to your page.
Traffic we send
2,086 reader clicks sent to publishers in the last 30 days. This counts clicks on source links through /go across the whole site. It does not count visits or readers, and it leaves out affiliate links and the sponsor link in our newsletter. Automated visitors and link previews are not counted.
How we fetch
Before we fetch an article page we check the outlet's robots.txt, and keep what it says for up to 24 hours. We identify ourselves with the user agent revealed-news/1.0 (+https://revealednews.com), and the robots.txt name is revealed-news. If the file is missing (HTTP 404 and similar) we treat the site as having no rules. If the rules forbid the page, or the file errors, times out or cannot be reached (HTTP 5xx or 429, a timeout), we do not fetch the page. We read an outlet's RSS feed separately, and robots.txt rules are not applied to the feed.
The three use levels
We keep a catalog of the outlets we read. Each one has one of three levels, set by us.
allowed- We may fetch the article page, after robots.txt allows it, and use its text as evidence when drafting a story that cites you.
link_only- We never fetch the article page or use its text. From your RSS feed we keep the title, link, publish date, a snippet of at most 300 characters and the image address in the feed item. We do not download or show that image. Today no story is drafted from an outlet at this level.
excluded- The same as
link_only, and we do not draft new stories from the outlet or cite it in them.
We do not publish a list of which outlet is at which level.
No publisher images
The stories we draft now, since our own pipeline took over, carry no cover or article images from the outlets they cite. Their pages name each outlet and link to it, and show none of its pictures.
Opting out or changing your level
There are two ways, and either one works on its own.
- Add
User-agent: revealed-newsandDisallow: /to your robots.txt. We check it before every article fetch, so this stops us fetching your article pages. A change can take up to 24 hours to reach us. - Email sources@revealednews.com. We can then move your outlet to
link_onlyorexcludedin our catalog, or stop reading your feed.
