Bungie has delayed the September 22 update for its multiplayer shooter Marathon to December 8, citing the need to deliver 'larger experiences' through the Symbiosis update. The overhaul includes a permanent PvE mode, a social space/firing range, an experimental TDM mode, and a refreshed Perimeter zone. The studio also confirmed moving away from a 'strict seasonal schedule' to prioritize flexibility in development.
The October 6 update will reset Marathon's progression and in-game economy, introduce a new rewards pass, and revive the PvE mode Vault Breaker for a limited time. Bungie emphasized addressing player feedback about 'more depth, variety, and stronger progression,' with Symbiosis described as the 'first major step' in the game's 'next chapter.'
Marathon's shift toward PvE and survival elements includes plans for 'alien and dynamic survival experiences,' with hints of giant alien bugs in future content. However, the game has faced challenges, including declining player numbers and Bungie's recent layoffs. The studio acknowledged the need to 'evolve' Marathon to retain players, though some critics question if the changes will be enough.
