CD Projekt Red Confirms Cyberpunk 2077 Movie Will Not Adapt Game Story 1:1

The short version

CD Projekt Red confirmed a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film will not replicate the game's narrative, instead focusing on an original story within the universe. The project partners with Paramount Pictures, with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura involved. This approach mirrors the studio's Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, which featured new characters in the same world.

CD Projekt Red stated a live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 will not directly replicate the game's storyline. Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski indicated the film will present an original narrative set within the Cyberpunk universe. This decision aligns with the studio's approach to the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, which introduced new characters while maintaining the game's setting.

The film is being developed in collaboration with Paramount Pictures, now part of Skydance following a merger. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for the Transformers franchise, is overseeing the project. This follows CD Projekt Red's strategy of creating standalone stories within the Cyberpunk universe, as seen in the Edgerunners series.

The studio also announced work has begun on Project Hadar, its first original universe game. CD Projekt Red previously focused on licensed worlds like The Witcher and Cyberpunk. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 launches on October 20, continuing the anime's exploration of the Cyberpunk setting with new characters.
