Ikea has released a free mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim called Kallax Storageborn, which adds the company's well-known Kallax shelf to the game as a talking companion voiced by actor Matt Berry. The mod was revealed via a trailer on September 9 and is available now through Bethesda's Creations system on PC and Xbox.
Rather than simply adding an item, the mod includes a full questline. It activates when a player becomes overencumbered, prompting a trip to an abandoned Dwemer dungeon (described by Kotaku as an ancient dungeon) to collect pieces needed to assemble the shelf. Once built, the shelf is brought to life and equipped with a magical weapon called the Allenblade, an Allen-wrench-themed item. The mod also adds other loot, including a Meatball Helmet.
Once assembled, Kallax follows the player around Skyrim with its own animations and can be summoned at any time using a new Thu'um, or shout, added by the mod—shouting the word 'IKEA' to call it. The shelf can also store excess inventory items, which then visibly appear on it in the game world. Matt Berry voices the character extensively throughout, guiding players through a quest to help him recover memories and heirlooms tied to his past.
Both PC Gamer and Kotaku describe the mod as an obvious marketing stunt but note that real effort and money clearly went into its production, given the amount of voice acting and quest design involved. Coverage of the mod points to a full playthrough posted by YouTuber ESO, which shows the entire experience in action.
The Kallax is a real, existing line of Ikea shelving. Matt Berry, known for roles including What We Do in the Shadows, previously did a Movember-themed voiceover for Hockey Night in Canada, according to PC Gamer.
