Writer David Jenkins said on Meta's Threads platform that "My Booster Gold won't be moving forward," signaling the end of his work on a planned TV series based on the DC Comics character. Jenkins had announced his involvement in 2025, saying he was inheriting the project from Danny McBride. Jenkins previously created Our Flag Means Death for HBO and People of Earth for TBS.

Jenkins' announcement came after he referenced recent comments from actor Mahershala Ali, who told GQ that he had "moved on" from Marvel Studios' Blade project and would not be involved if the studio decided to make the movie without him. Ali said, "[Marvel] had me under contract, they have billions of dollars. If they wanted to do the movie, we would've done the movie. So we're not doing the movie."

Booster Gold was originally unveiled in 2023 as part of DC Studios' Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate, an initiative led by James Gunn and Peter Safran to relaunch DC's cinematic universe. The slate also included projects such as Superman and the upcoming HBO series Lanterns. The character, created by Dan Jurgens and first appearing in 1986's Booster Gold #1, is Michael Jon Carter, a former 25th-century football star who travels to the present day with his robot companion Skeets, adopting the superhero name given to him by former President Ronald Reagan. In the comics, he has been a member of the Justice League International and the Justice Society of America, and is frequently paired with fellow hero Blue Beetle.

It remains unclear whether DC Studios plans to continue developing some version of Booster Gold without Jenkins attached.

The news adds to a series of changes to Gunn and Safran's DCU plans, which have shifted significantly since their original 2023 announcement. While DC Studios has released projects like Superman, Supergirl, and Creature Commandos, other planned series such as The Authority, Waller, and Paradise Lost have reportedly fallen by the wayside. Projects including Swamp Thing and The Brave and the Bold are still awaited, while upcoming DCU releases include Lanterns in August, Clayface in October, the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow in July 2027, and a show centered on Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd.
