Dave Bautista, known for playing Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is reportedly in talks to play Kratos in Amazon's God of War television series. PC Gamer and GamesRadar+ cite a Variety report on the talks, while Polygon and Kotaku cite a separate report from Deadline, both saying negotiations are underway but that no casting has been officially announced.
Bautista would replace Ryan Hurst, who was originally cast as Kratos but suffered a bicep injury on set that required surgery and a lengthy recovery. Hurst is currently appearing in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey as Mentor. According to GamesRadar+, Amazon and Sony had reportedly considered delaying production until Hurst recovered but ultimately decided to recast the role instead. Kotaku reports production has been on hold with plans to resume around mid-October, while GamesRadar+ says the plan is to resume in the fall. Polygon adds that Bautista would join the project after finishing work on a Highlander remake, for which he bulked up, noting that he has slimmed down in recent years for other roles.
If Bautista takes the role, Kotaku reports he would need to reshoot four episodes that Hurst had already filmed in addition to remaining episodes. The casting change comes alongside other recastings: actors Callum Vinson and Island Austin, who play Atreus and Thrud in the first season, will be replaced by different actors for season two as the characters are aged up, according to Polygon and Kotaku. GamesRadar+ notes this suggests a significant time gap between the two seasons, drawing a comparison to the three years between the God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok games that the series is adapting.
The confirmed cast includes Ed Skrein as Baldur, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Max Parker as Heimdall, Sonya Walger as Freya, and Alastair Duncan reprising his game role as Mimir. Polygon additionally lists Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Danny Woodburn as Brok. Per Polygon, the series follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey to spread the ashes of Faye, with Kratos teaching Atreus to be a better god while Atreus teaches his father to be a better human. Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, with Frederick E.O. Toye directing the first two episodes. The show has a two-season order and will stream on Prime Video, though it does not yet have a release date.
GamesRadar+ notes that the God of War series has faced a rocky path since being announced in 2022, including a largely negative reaction to a first-look image released in February. PC Gamer points out that Bautista has also been rumored for other video game adaptations, having lobbied in 2022 to play Marcus Fenix in Netflix's planned Gears of War film, a project whose casting has not yet been announced.
