Jon Watts, director of the Tom Holland 'Spider-Man' trilogy, has been tapped to helm the first film in a new 'Star Wars' trilogy, according to multiple reports. The project, written by Simon Kinberg, is described as either continuing the Skywalker Saga or functioning as a standalone series, with no official clarification from Lucasfilm. Kinberg, who previously worked on 'Star Wars: Rebels' and consulted on 'The Force Awakens,' has been developing the trilogy since 2018.
Sources indicate the trilogy may follow the Skywalker family, potentially spanning episodes 10–12 of the saga, though others suggest it could be a separate narrative. Daisy Ridley is reportedly set to reprise her role as Rey, though this has not been confirmed. The project remains in development, with no greenlight from Disney as of yet. Lucasfilm declined to comment on the report.
The announcement comes amid ongoing delays for other 'Star Wars' projects, including a Rey-centric film and a 'Lando' movie. Meanwhile, 'Star Wars: Starfighter,' directed by Shawn Levy, is set for a May 2027 release. Watts, who co-created the 2024 'Star Wars' series 'Skeleton Crew,' joins a list of directors for the franchise, including J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson. Kinberg's involvement marks his return to the 'Star Wars' universe after his work on 'Rebels.'
