Kelsey Grammer to Star in NBC's 'Pops,' EMT Drama Based on True Story

2 outlets

The short version

Kelsey Grammer is set to star in NBC's developing drama 'Pops,' based on the true story of Ed Levien, a Maryland man who became a volunteer EMT in his 60s. The series, written by 'Chicago Med' alum Danny Weiss, follows a man aged out of a successful career who joins emergency medicine alongside younger first responders.

Kelsey Grammer will headline and executive produce 'Pops,' a drama in development at NBC. The series, written by Danny Weiss, centers on a man who transitions from a successful career to emergency medicine in his 60s. Weiss, a former Marine and 'Chicago Med' writer, collaborated with Ed Levien, the real-life inspiration for the title character.

The project draws parallels to ABC's 'The Rookie,' which is based on a real-life career transition. Levien, who served as an EMT from age 64 to 76, was nicknamed 'Pops' by younger colleagues. Grammer's role marks his return to NBC, where he previously played Dr. Frasier Crane for two decades.

Grammer's involvement includes executive production through his company Grammnet NH Productions. The series is being developed by Universal Television, with Weiss and Levien also serving as executive producers. Grammer's recent work includes a role in 'Avengers: Doomsday,' set for December release.
