The short version

Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man: Brand New Day has opened to record-breaking numbers and strong reviews, with critics praising its grounded New York setting, its choice to keep Peter Parker forgotten by loved ones, and organic cameos from Marvel heroes like the Hulk, Yelena Belova, and the Punisher.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has debuted to historic box office numbers, according to Polygon. The film earned $72 million from preview screenings, topping the previous domestic preview record of $60 million set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Deadline reported the film is expected to clear $100 million in its first Friday including previews, a feat previously achieved by only five other films. Brand New Day is projected to surpass Endgame's opening weekend and make at least $850 million overseas in its first five days. The film has a 90% critic score and 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and its release coincides with a strong year for theaters overall, with this weekend potentially setting a record for combined domestic box office gross.

The film picks up five years after Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Doctor Strange's spell erased Peter Parker from the memories of everyone who loved him. According to GamesRadar+, Brand New Day finds Peter isolated, burned out, and living in a run-down apartment, with his spider DNA beginning to overwhelm him in ways he can't control. Rather than reversing the memory-loss spell, the film keeps Peter forgotten by Ned and MJ throughout, including a scene where MJ tells Peter she doesn't know or love him. GamesRadar+ argues this choice strengthens Peter's arc by forcing him to actively rebuild connections rather than have them restored, and gives the MCU something it has lacked: consequences that stick, unlike the reversed deaths of characters such as Loki, Vision, and Iron Man in other Marvel projects.

Kotaku's coverage highlights how the film integrates other Marvel characters without turning into a crossover event. Yelena Belova (the new Black Widow) helps Peter investigate psychic attacks in New York, Bruce Banner (Hulk) consults on a device to suppress Peter's growing powers, and much of the film functions as a Spider-Man and Punisher team-up. Sadie Sink also appears as Jean Grey, introduced alongside her sister Sara as telepaths abandoned by their mother once their powers were discovered — a storyline Kotaku says gestures toward mutant prejudice without explicitly setting up the X-Men or Professor Xavier. Kotaku describes these appearances as feeling organic rather than like advertisements for future films.

A separate Kotaku report details a scene in which Peter, dealing with his DNA imbalance, attends one of Bruce Banner's university lectures. A student presses Banner on why Thanos chose to eliminate half of all life instead of using the Infinity Stones to double resources — a long-running fan criticism of Thanos's plan from Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Banner deflects the question to a green-painted student who only shouts 'Hulk smash,' which Kotaku frames as the film acknowledging, without resolving, a plot point that has puzzled fans since 2018.

Polygon's review of the film's setting argues that Brand New Day is the first MCU Spider-Man movie to fully embrace New York City, unlike Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home, which spent significant time in other locations or were dominated by multiversal plot business. The film reintroduces Sam Raimi-style point-of-view web-slinging shots absent from the three Jon Watts-directed films, and has Spider-Man interacting with heroes like the Hulk, Punisher, and Yelena Belova in low-stakes, everyday New York encounters rather than world-ending team-ups. Yelena reportedly explains in the film that Spider-Man handles 'small potatoes' while her New Avengers handle bigger threats.

On the streaming front, Polygon reports that Brand New Day will likely follow the release pattern of Sony's other Spider-Man films. Based on the gaps between theatrical and digital releases for Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Polygon estimates Brand New Day will arrive on VOD in October or early November 2026, with a Blu-ray/DVD release following about a month later, likely before the end of the year. Because of Sony's exclusivity deal with Netflix, which grants the streamer 18 months of exclusive access before films move to Disney Plus, Polygon projects Brand New Day will begin streaming on Netflix in early 2027 and arrive on Disney Plus in summer 2028.
