VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas has revealed that despite the Disney Plus series being billed as the conclusion to the WandaVision trilogy, he didn't approach it that way. Speaking to SFX magazine, Matalas said he wasn't told to create a story that completes the trilogy, which also includes WandaVision and Agatha All Along. Instead, he described VisionQuest as "more of a sequel to WandaVision in a lot of ways," while also noting it exists on its own since it centers on Vision's story and delves into parts of his origin that may go further back than previously believed.
Matalas also indicated he doesn't see this as necessarily the end of Vision's story. He said that as soon as filming wrapped, he and cast members Paul Bettany and James D'Arcy were ready to continue with many more seasons, though he acknowledged that decision ultimately rests with Marvel Studios.
The series follows White Vision, who has been loaded with Vision's memories, as he tries to understand his identity. This involves him retreating into a mind palace where he speaks with other Marvel AIs and his creator, Ultron, all while being hunted by a bounty hunter and dealing with his son's arrival in his life. Elizabeth Olsen is not returning as Wanda Maximoff, having exited the MCU after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Matalas addressed a significant moment late in the season, clarifying that despite viewer speculation, it is not meant to tease Wanda's return.
In a separate discussion, Matalas explained that VisionQuest will approach Tony Stark's death in Avengers: Endgame from an AI's perspective, specifically through FRIDAY, who witnessed the moment. He raised questions the show will explore, such as what it means for an AI unable to protect the person it was programmed to protect, and whether AI characters are corporeal, digital, or avatars, noting the pilot will address this quickly.
The series follows FRIDAY's predecessor JARVIS, who monitored Tony Stark's vitals and announced his death to the Avengers in Age of Ultron before FRIDAY took over. VisionQuest gives each AI character a human form, including FRIDAY, now played by Orla Brady taking over from Kerry Condon's voice work, appearing in the form Vision requested. The cast also includes Paul Bettany as Vision, Emily Hampshire as EDITH, T'Nia Miller as Jocasta, James D'Arcy as JARVIS, James Spader as Ultron, and Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff.
VisionQuest is set to arrive on Disney Plus on October 14.
