Spider-Noir, the Nicolas Cage-led series that reimagined a jaded, down-on-his-luck version of Ben Reilly aka the Spider, will not return for a second season on Prime Video. According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television had expected larger streaming numbers than the show delivered.
The decision comes despite the series earning 11 Emmy nominations and a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Reports have indicated the first season's budget was around $400 million, a figure that likely raised the bar for what the show needed to achieve commercially to justify a renewal.
Spider-Noir is now the second Sony Marvel spin-off to be canceled as part of Amazon and Sony's multi-title deal to develop projects using IP from Sony's Universe of Marvel characters. The first, Silk: Spider-Society, was canceled before it even entered production.
Despite these setbacks, Deadline reports that Amazon and Sony are continuing to move forward with the broader deal, with multiple additional projects still in development. One project is said to be nearing a series order, though specific details have not been disclosed.
In Spider-Noir, Nicolas Cage starred as the titular detective-turned-hero, facing off against classic villains including Sandman and Silvermane. The series is available to stream now on Prime Video in both black-and-white and color versions.
