Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the original 2001 Halo: Combat Evolved built in Unreal Engine 5, has drawn attention both for its ending sequences and for how well it holds up as a modern FPS, according to Polygon and GamesRadar+.
Polygon explains that finishing the main 10-mission campaign on any difficulty leads to Master Chief and Cortana escaping the destruction of the Pillar of Autumn and the Halo ring. Cortana tells Chief they are the only survivors, and the two share the same closing dialogue from the original game—"Halo. It's finished." / "No. I think we're just getting started"—which Polygon notes originally set up Halo 2.
Beating the campaign on legendary difficulty unlocks a secret post-credits scene, per Polygon. Unlike the original non-canon legendary ending, which showed Sgt. Johnson seemingly dying in an explosion, the new version shows Johnson alive on a beach, watching footage of that old ending before boarding a pelican and saying, "See you in the sequel." Both endings then show 343 Guilty Spark flying through space, which Polygon says confirms its survival and hints at the character's role in kicking off Halo 2's story.
Based on these scenes, Polygon speculates that a Halo 2: Campaign Evolved remake is likely in development, though no official announcement has been made, and suggests a Halo 3 remake could follow to complete the original trilogy. Polygon adds that fans can revisit the original sequels now through Halo: The Master Chief Collection while waiting.
Separately, GamesRadar+'s Josh West praised Halo: Campaign Evolved as a well-paced, faithful remake that retains the spirit of the 2001 original while adding modern touches, including console campaign-crossplay. He notes the main campaign takes about 10-14 hours to complete, making it suited for co-op play over a weekend or a few evenings. The remake also includes three new prologue missions set roughly a year before the original story, featuring Chief and Sgt. Johnson.
West highlights the moment Master Chief first steps onto Installation 04 as a standout, calling it still awe-inspiring today. He acknowledges that some elements feel dated given the original's broad influence on the genre, but concludes the game remains a masterclass in FPS level design. The game is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, including via Game Pass Ultimate, with a standard edition priced at $49.99 and a premium edition at $69.99.
