Rockstar Games has revealed Nopixel V, described by the studio as 'the next evolution' of the GTA Online roleplaying community. The project is a collaboration between Rockstar and Nopixel Studios, the team behind the popular Nopixel public and private GTA 5 roleplaying servers. According to Eurogamer, Rockstar acquired the modding team and technology behind FiveM, a GTA Online RP platform, more than three years ago, and Nopixel V represents the results of that partnership.
Despite the announcement, access to Nopixel V will be extremely limited at launch. The beta will only be available to a select group of invited streamers and well-known GTA Online roleplayers, with a list of invitees published on the Nopixel website. Nopixel stated on its Discord server that 'over time, access [to Nopixel V] will expand, including more phases of invites,' but confirmed that 'for everyone on nopixel Public and nopixel 4.0, nothing changes' for now.
The closed beta will be accessible through the Rockstar Games Launcher, and invited players are set to begin streaming Nopixel V starting September 8. For fans without an invite, the primary way to experience the update will be watching these livestreams. Rockstar has promised 'familiar faces reprising fan-favorite characters and new personalities beginning their own stories' during the beta period.
Nopixel V includes several changes to the GTA 5 experience, including modifications to the in-game map and the addition of 1,000 ownable properties, according to details shared by the Nopixel team. Eurogamer reports the update also overhauls the server's character creator, adds new landmarks, and offers 'refreshed visuals' along with 'more reactive pedestrians.' Nopixel described the roleplaying scene broadly as having 'morphed Grand Theft Auto 5 into a community-driven, multiplayer rendition of Los Santos where participants inhabit bespoke characters to weave personal narratives in a living, shared ecosystem.'
The announcement has led to some confusion among casual observers, given the timing so close to the anticipated release of GTA 6. However, Rockstar has not announced any plans for GTA Online in relation to GTA 6, nor has it given GTA 6 a PC release date. The Nopixel team credited its collaboration with Rockstar for enabling new development tools, stating that the partnership has allowed them 'to push the boundaries of what's possible in Grand Theft Auto 5.'
