The Blood of Dawnwalker, the debut open-world RPG from Rebel Wolves, a studio founded by senior developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3, is now out on consoles and PC. The game casts players as Coen, a vampire warrior who must split his time between day and night as an in-game calendar advances, with a central plot built around a 30-day deadline to save his family. According to PC Gamer, the story can end in seven different ways: four involve assaulting Griefberg Castle (alone, with the rebel group the Manumits, or with the vampire Lacra), one involves striking a deal with the antagonist Brencis, and two are secret endings reachable before the others. Key NPCs including Crake (also known as Marat), Lacra, and Father Florin factor into different outcomes, and an epilogue sequence reflects choices made throughout the playthrough, including the fates of side characters and towns.
Kotaku published a piece framing the game through a satirical lens, imagining characters from Interview with the Vampire (Daniel, Armand, Louis, Lestat, and Claudia) reacting to Dawnwalker's mechanics and lore—joking about the game's vampire hierarchy, its 'Blood Mass' sequence, the 'vrakhiri' turning ritual, and abilities like the Sky Gift and Dark Gift, while also poking fun at gameplay elements such as chopping wood and finding lost pigs.
Separately, Kotaku reported on the game's modding scene, noting that the most downloaded mod on Nexus Mods, called 'Better Story Timer,' had been downloaded over 36,000 times since its release, with more than 5,000 downloads added in a single day. The mod gives players more time to complete objectives and can remove some time restrictions tied to the game's day/night cycle. Other popular mods increase inventory capacity, loot, leveling speed, and talent points. The outlet noted that over 50,000 people were playing the game on Steam at the time of writing, meaning the modded playerbase represents a fraction of the total audience, and pointed out that these mods are unavailable to console players.
Polygon published guides covering specific quest content, including the 'In the Name of the Father' questline involving Father Florin, where players can choose to side with him, refuse him, or kill him, each leading to different short-term consequences and affecting access to a shortcut into Griefberg Castle. Polygon also detailed the game's three romance options—herbalist Anca, vampire Lacra, and Manumits leader Crake—outlining specific dialogue choices and quest orders required to pursue each relationship, as well as points of no return that can lock players out of a romance if missed.
GamesRadar+ announced it would be running the game through its recurring 'RPG Club' feature for September, with editor Andy Brown serving as host. The outlet's stated plan includes playing on 'Duelist' difficulty, working within the 30-day family rescue timeline, building up Coen's vampiric abilities, and not reloading saves to avoid consequences of decisions made during the playthrough.
