Nvidia's DLSS 5, first announced in March and slated for a fall launch, appears to have leaked ahead of schedule. Developer Renan Maniero discovered that the early access build of NBA 2K27 contains a new file called nvngx_dlssnr.dll, tied to Nvidia's DLSS Neural Rendering (DLSS-NR) technology believed to be part of DLSS 5. Modders quickly extracted the file and began experimenting with it in other games.
One of the first results came from a developer on the RenoDX Discord server, who got DLSS 5 running in Remedy's Control, applying it specifically to character models. The implementation includes seven adjustable sliders controlling style, intensity, tone, and structure strength. According to the developer, DLSS 5 currently runs only on Blackwell GPUs, and testing on an RTX 5070 Ti at 4K showed frame rates dropping from 71 FPS to 35 FPS with the feature enabled, though the specific settings and internal resolution used weren't disclosed, making the performance hit hard to fully assess. Tom's Hardware cautions that this is an early, modder-driven implementation and shouldn't be seen as confirmation of final launch hardware support or performance.
YouTuber PureDark went further, implementing the DLSS-NR mod into the 15-year-old The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. According to TechPowerUp, the results showed dramatic improvements to character faces and lighting, with better detailing, shadows, and facial structure that in some scenes appeared close to path-traced. TechPowerUp notes this is an unofficial mod built from a pre-release DLL extracted from an unrelated game, so the final DLSS 5 product could look considerably different, and questions remain about how much artistic control developers will retain over the effect given the mixed reception to character face changes when DLSS 5 was first announced.
Separately, Tom's Hardware verified that modder "Uncle Burrito" managed to patch the leaked DLL to work on Nvidia's previous-generation RTX 4000 series (Ada Lovelace) cards, confirming it functions on an RTX 4080. The DLL had initially only worked on Blackwell-based RTX 5000 series GPUs because certain CUDA binaries inside it, as TechPowerUp explained, could only be read by Blackwell hardware, even though the underlying AI model runs on FP8 precision that Ada Lovelace GPUs can also process. Uncle Burrito told Tom's Hardware they identified the incompatible binaries and patched in working replacements, reasoning that Ada-equivalent binaries likely hadn't been built yet since the file was an early development build. Other developers in the RenoDX Discord are reportedly working on their own versions of similar patches.
It remains unclear whether Nvidia will officially support DLSS 5 on non-Blackwell hardware at launch. Tom's Hardware suggests that the modding community's success getting it running on Ada Lovelace cards could influence Nvidia's decision, though extending support to older Ampere GPUs may be more difficult since that architecture lacks native FP8 support.
Both Tom's Hardware and TechPowerUp emphasize that all of this stems from an early, leaked, and likely unfinished build of the technology. Tom's Hardware notes that Nvidia's original March demo ran on two RTX 5090s, and that by SIGGRAPH 2026 the company had distilled the model to run on a single GPU, suggesting further optimization is likely before the official release. Both outlets say the final version's image quality, performance demands, and supported hardware could differ substantially from what modders have shown so far.
