Nvidia has officially confirmed that DLSS 5 will launch September 3 at 9pm Pacific Time, debuting in NBA 2K27 from developer Visual Concepts and publisher 2K. The technology, which Nvidia calls 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, will be available on all GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs and laptops, as well as GeForce NOW. At a Gamescom technical briefing, Nvidia said support is strictly limited to RTX 50-series hardware, running on Blackwell's fifth-generation Tensor cores, with no fallback path for RTX 40-series or older cards.
DLSS 5 works by taking a game's already-rendered frame, along with data such as motion vectors, surface normals, and lighting semantics, and enhancing details like skin, hair, lighting, and reflections without altering underlying geometry or character models. Nvidia describes this as fundamentally different from generative AI models, which are probabilistic and produce inconsistent results between generations; DLSS 5 is designed to be deterministic, processing every frame in real time rather than reconstructing images from scratch. Developers get extensive control over the effect, including three model variants (A, B, and C), Structure and Tone Intensity sliders, and masking tools that can target specific characters, objects, or environmental elements like foliage, all aimed at preserving artists' original intent.
The technology has been divisive since its original reveal at GTC 2026, where CEO Jensen Huang called it the 'GPT moment for graphics.' Early comparison images, including a widely criticized Resident Evil Requiem screenshot, drew accusations that the AI was altering character likenesses; Nvidia later said that specific comparison was misaligned footage from mismatched moments in an animation, not a flaw in the model. Journalists who got hands-on previews of the official NBA 2K27 integration reported convincingly improved lighting, shadows, and skin detail, though one reviewer noted that character animations and cutscenes now stand out as comparatively stiff against the more lifelike visuals, creating a new kind of uncanny-valley effect.
Just days before the official launch, a version of the DLSS 5 DLL leaked through an early NBA 2K27 build, allowing modders to inject the technology into other games and, in some cases, get it running on RTX 40-series, 30-series, and even 20-series cards by patching around CUDA binaries. Performance dropped roughly 36 to 39 percent on an RTX 4090 in tests with Control, while RTX 30-series cards, which lack native FP8 support, saw far steeper frame-rate losses. Nvidia has emphasized that these unofficial mods do not reflect what developers can achieve with proper engine integration and dev-controlled tuning, and that native titles will only offer players a simple on/off toggle reflecting the developer's intended look.
On performance, Nvidia says enabling DLSS 5's neural rendering alone can reduce frame rates by roughly 50 to 60 percent, but the company intends it to be paired with Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation. In benchmarks shared by Nvidia for NBA 2K27 with the full DLSS stack enabled, the RTX 5090 reportedly reached around 370 fps at 4K Ultra, with the RTX 5080 at roughly 233 fps; at 1440p the RTX 5070 was cited near 260 fps, and even the RTX 5060 exceeded 250 fps at 1080p. Nvidia notes the underlying model has become roughly five times more efficient since March, when it required dual RTX 5090s to run, and says further optimizations are planned. DLSS 5's debut coincides with a broader wave of DLSS 4.5 integrations this week, including STAR WARS Zero Company, Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2, Crimson Moon, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and The Blood of Dawnwalker.
