3 outlets10/3/2026

The short version

Capcom has announced plans to integrate AI into its RE Engine development workflow through the REX Project, emphasizing efficiency improvements rather than generative AI for content creation. The company clarified it will not use AI-generated assets in games but aims to 'create games together with AI' through workflow optimizations.

Capcom's RE Engine development team, led by programmer Satoshi Ishida, revealed plans to transform the engine into an 'AI-generation game engine' via the REX Project. This initiative, discussed at the Capcom Open Conference RE:2026 on October 2, 2026, focuses on integrating AI into development workflows rather than directly generating game content. Ishida emphasized that AI will streamline tasks like data processing and testing, not replace human creativity.

The REX Project includes six systems, such as RE:Dox for standardized data handling, RE:UI for AI-assisted tool optimization, and RE:Flows for visual scripting. These tools aim to address challenges like managing large-scale game data and supporting over 2,000 developers globally. Capcom also highlighted that AI will not be used to create art or assets, aligning with its prior statement that 'the creativity at the core of such experiences should be handled by humans.'

While Capcom has not adopted generative AI for content creation, it acknowledges AI's role in improving development efficiency. The company stated it will use AI to 'enhance efficiency and boost productivity' but clarified that 'assets generated by AI' will not be implemented in game content. This approach contrasts with broader industry trends, as some developers explore generative AI for art and narrative design.
