Big Walk Developer Explains Xbox Exclusion Due to BDS Boycott

4 outlets

The short version

Australian indie developer House House confirmed Big Walk will not launch on Xbox due to the BDS boycott targeting Microsoft. The co-op puzzle game's creators stated their decision aligns with the pro-Palestinian movement's goals, citing Microsoft's alleged complicity in Israel's actions. The game, released on PC, PS5, and Switch 2, has sold over one million copies since its August launch.

House House stated their decision to exclude Xbox from Big Walk's release aligns with the BDS movement's boycott of Microsoft. The developer emphasized that keeping the game off Xbox contradicts their intention for players to enjoy it with friends, but they believe meaningful change can be made in the world through coordinated collective action against corporate complicity in Israel's actions. The statement was shared on social media and the game's website, including resources about the BDS movement's goals.

The BDS movement has targeted Microsoft for its alleged use of Azure Cloud and AI systems in Israeli surveillance of Palestinians. While Microsoft reportedly cut off Israel's access to some cloud tech in 2025, the boycott remains active. House House expressed hope that Xbox would be removed from the boycott list, allowing the game to reach more players. The developer also highlighted their support for Indigenous causes, pledging at least 1% of their income to Wurundjeri land restitution.

Big Walk, praised as one of the year's best games, has sold over one million copies since its August release. Despite the Xbox exclusion, the game's cooperative mechanics and lack of guidance have drawn acclaim. The BDS movement's pressure on Microsoft has previously led to changes, including reported severed ties with Israeli employees and restrictions on cloud services. House House's decision aligns with other developers opposing Microsoft's policies, though the boycott remains ongoing.
