A Netflix press release stated the footage was 'captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5,' though outlets noted the absence of any mention of the PS5 Pro, despite the PlayStation Store listing GTA 6 as 'PS5 Pro Enhanced.'
The reveal was exclusive to Netflix for six hours before releasing for free on Rockstar's YouTube channel at 9 p.m. EDT. Ahead of the premiere, Rockstar had released only two prior trailers showing montages of action across the game's fictional Florida-inspired setting, Leonidas, without officially showing gameplay. Outlets anticipated the special would feature more of dual protagonists Lucia and Jason, including their reported 'seamless' switching mechanic, along with San Andreas-style role-playing systems such as exercising and eating, and a heightened level of environmental detail.
The Netflix debut followed more than a week of unauthorized leaks of GTA 6 gameplay footage, which Rockstar described as 'heartbreaking' for its developers. According to GamesRadar+, the leaker had also been linked to crypto scams and a reported $165,000 ad-buying opportunity tied to the leaked material.
Netflix's involvement marked a new kind of promotional partnership for a video game of this scale. Netflix VP of nonfiction series Brandon Riegg said in a statement that 'the anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented' and called the partnership a reflection of Netflix's ambition to host 'the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium.'
In the hours before the premiere, confusion spread among content creators over Rockstar's streaming guidelines. Rockstar initially said only that creators could share 'reaction content' after the Netflix debut, prompting questions from streamers, including Timothy 'TimTheTatman' Betar, about whether livestreaming or co-streaming the footage itself would be allowed. Rockstar later clarified that creators could livestream 'An Extended Look' starting at 3 p.m. ET on August 27, provided they did not repost the unedited video in full without commentary.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, with no other versions currently announced by Rockstar.
