Persona 4 Revival, Atlus' upcoming remake of the classic RPG, will feature an entirely new English voice cast rather than bringing back the original 2008 actors. Series producer Kazuhisa Wada told GamesRadar+ at Gamescom 2026 that the original cast was recorded a long time ago, and some actors have since left the industry entirely, while others—such as Yuri Lowenthal (Yosuke), Troy Baker (Kanji), and Laura Bailey (Rise)—have become so prominent in the years since that scheduling them became very difficult.
Wada said Atlus tried to reassemble the cast but ultimately decided it was an all-or-nothing situation. Rather than mix a handful of returning actors with new ones, the team chose to start fresh with an entirely new cast, partly out of respect for the work the original actors did on the game.
Separately, Wada addressed fan requests for a romanceable Yosuke option, a topic that has circulated since players discovered cut voice lines from the original Persona 4 suggesting Yosuke was once intended to be a romance option. According to Wada, Atlus did consider bringing this back but decided against it because adding a Yosuke romance would mean the team would feel obligated to add romance options for all the other male party members as well, which the team felt was too much additional work given time and schedule constraints.
Wada acknowledged that Yosuke was 'a little bit insensitive in terms of how he treats outsiders sometimes' in the original game, and said changes have been made to better fit 'the world we live in now'—citing a homophobic comment Yosuke makes toward party member Kanji Tatsumi as one specific example being revised. However, sources note that Atlus has not detailed exactly how far these changes go, leaving open questions about whether Yosuke's underlying homophobic characterization will be meaningfully addressed or simply softened.
Coverage notes this isn't the first time Wada has cited workload and cost as reasons for not fulfilling fan requests in a Persona remake; he previously gave similar reasoning for not including Kotone, the female protagonist option from Persona 3 Portable, in Persona 3 Reload. Fans have since taken it upon themselves to mod that content back into the game, and some outlets note that fans have similarly used remaining files from Persona 4 Golden to mod the Yosuke romance into the PC version themselves.
