AMD has started pushing firmware binaries for its RDNA 4m GPU IP, also known as GFX 1170, to the Linux Firmware repository, according to reporting from Phoronix cited by both TechPowerUp and Wccftech. AMD typically publishes such firmware at or shortly after a product's launch, and in some recent cases slightly ahead of release, suggesting the first products using RDNA 4m are nearing launch.

RDNA 4m does not follow AMD's conventional naming scheme. While RDNA 3.5 uses the GFX 11.5 architecture ID and RDNA 4 uses GFX 12.0, RDNA 4m sits in between at GFX 11.7. TechPowerUp describes it as not a true RDNA 4 implementation, since it borrows some elements without being a full match, and also not simply RDNA 3.5, since it includes certain upgrades over that architecture.

Wccftech notes that AMD's work on GFX 11.7 has been visible for months, starting with the addition of the GFX1170 target to the AMDGPU LLVM compiler earlier this year, followed by the introduction of GFX1171 and GFX1172 targets, with GFX1171 later reaching Mesa 26.3. This progression indicates that multiple RDNA 4m configurations are under development, though AMD has not yet disclosed the name of the APU family that will use them.

Both outlets link RDNA 4m to AMD's upcoming Zen 6-based Medusa Point APUs, expected to be the platform's first appearance. TechPowerUp reports expected capabilities including support for INT8 data types and native FSR 4 technology, though it notes that AMD's separate announcement of FSR 4 upscaling support for older RDNA generations leaves the specific purpose of RDNA 4m somewhat unclear.

TechPowerUp adds that AMD plans to keep its RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics in use until 2029, meaning many consumers buying laptops in coming years will have integrated graphics similar to today's Ryzen AI 300 and 400 series chips. Against that backdrop, RDNA 4m is described as a welcome upgrade for integrated graphics, even with its limitations, while more advanced 'Redstone' features such as ML-based upscaling and rendering are said to depend on the full RDNA 4 IP rather than RDNA 4m.

Wccftech adds that the RDNA 4m firmware has been upstreamed to the linux-firmware repository so that Linux distributions can package it alongside the required AMDGPU drivers, and that the '4m' branding reflects instruction-set changes bringing the architecture closer to RDNA 4, even as AMD has not confirmed further product details.
