AMD's RDNA 4m integrated graphics, which had gone quiet for a few months, have resurfaced after being officially merged into the Mesa 26.3 open-source driver stack. The addition centers on a GPU target identified as GFX1171, part of a family of internal architecture IDs — including GFX1170 and GFX1172 — that AMD has introduced this year under the RDNA 4m classification.
According to TechPowerUp, RDNA 4m is not a true RDNA 4 design nor a simple RDNA 3 GPU, but sits just above RDNA 3.5, with reported support for INT8 data types and native FSR 4 upscaling technology. However, since AMD has separately announced that older RDNA generations will also gain FSR 4 support, the specific purpose of RDNA 4m remains unclear. With RDNA 4m now merged into Mesa, both the RADV and RadeonSI open-source drivers are being updated to support it.
Wccftech notes that GFX1171 is not a retail product name but an internally assigned architecture ID, similar to past designations like GFX1100 and GFX1200, used in Linux drivers and development tools ahead of official hardware releases. As of now, there appear to be no functional differences between the GFX1170, GFX1171, and GFX1172 targets in the driver code, suggesting AMD is expanding support for multiple hardware variants rather than adding new graphics features.
Both outlets link RDNA 4m to AMD's upcoming Zen 6-based 'Medusa Point' APUs. TechPowerUp reports that Medusa Point will introduce a desktop-exclusive RDNA 4 configuration paired with the RDNA 4m variant, while a related chip, 'Medusa Halo,' will instead use AMD's next-generation RDNA 5/UDNA architecture. Wccftech, citing reports, describes Medusa Point more broadly as the successor to the current Strix Point APU family, intended for products such as laptops and gaming handhelds, without specifying a desktop-exclusive graphics setup.
TechPowerUp adds that AMD has said it plans to keep its current RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics in use until 2029, meaning most laptop buyers in coming years will see graphics capabilities similar to today's Ryzen AI 300 and 400 series chips. Because of this, RDNA 4m could still be a meaningful upgrade despite its limitations, since AMD's planned 'Redstone' features, such as ML-based upscaling and rendering, rely on RDNA 4 IP to function. The report also points to a separate GFX1170 target, associated with the RDNA 3-based GFX11 generation, which includes instruction set extensions such as WMMA and SWMMAC — believed to represent an upgraded RDNA 3 design incorporating RDNA 4 modules to enable FSR 4 support even on the less powerful Medusa Point APU.
