AMD has submitted a new batch of patches to the Linux kernel mailing list that begin enabling support for Display Core Next 6, or DCN6, the display engine expected to accompany its next-generation RDNA 5 graphics architecture. The patches were first noted by Phoronix and covered by both TechPowerUp and Wccftech.

According to the reports, the code links DCN6 to AMD's GFX13 graphics engine, which corresponds to the RDNA 5 GPU family. This marks one of the earliest concrete references to RDNA 5 hardware appearing within the Linux ecosystem, even though AMD's next-gen cards are still reportedly months away from launch.

AMD's DCN display engine is responsible for display output, monitor connectivity, image scaling, pixel manipulation, and related functions. TechPowerUp notes that the DCN6 patches introduce new scaling integrity and costing surfaces, a UPSP pre-scaler for sampling 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 content before scaling, and new pixel formats within the display logic. Wccftech describes the current patches as basic groundwork rather than revealing specific performance or display capabilities, calling them necessary infrastructure that will be built upon in future updates.

TechPowerUp notes that if these features carry through to final silicon, they could support high-refresh, high-resolution gaming across various aspect ratios and configurations, though the outlet cautions that actual implementation depends on what AMD includes in the final GPU design.

Both outlets frame the patches as an early sign of RDNA 5 development progress ahead of shipments to AMD's add-in board partners, though the timeline for that remains unknown. TechPowerUp also points out that AMD has provided little public documentation between DCN 4.2.1 and DCN 6.0.0, with only a single mention of a DCN5 display engine, leaving it unclear whether AMD skipped that generation entirely.

Wccftech adds that additional patches are expected in the coming months, which should reveal more about display functionality, power management, and multimedia support for RDNA 5 as AMD continues building out its open-source Linux graphics stack.
