This weekend's streaming lineup is led by "The Whisper Man" on Netflix, a crime thriller starring Adam Scott as writer Tom Kennedy, whose 8-year-old son is abducted by someone claiming to be a serial killer already behind bars. Scott turns to his estranged father, retired detective Pete Willis (Robert De Niro), for help, with the cast also including Michael Keaton, Hamish Linklater and Michelle Monaghan. Reviewers called the film's premise creepy and praised the pairing of Scott and De Niro as an estranged father and son forced to work together.
Also making a splash on Prime Video is "The Last Sunrise," a romantic drama based on Anna Todd's novel starring Maia Reficco as a college student with chronic health issues who falls for a local fisherman (Fernando Lindez) while on a trip to Mallorca with her mother, played by Eva Longoria. Coverage described the film as capturing a summer feel through its lighting and setting, delivering emotional moments even though the central romance and story were seen as falling short.
On the TV side, Apple TV's sci-fi thriller "Dark Matter" returned for its second season, following Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) and his family as they go on the run through the multiverse. One review called the season 2 premiere one of the show's stronger episodes, while also noting the show can be convoluted. Apple TV's "Silo" also returned with season 3, focusing on Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) as the new Mayor of the underground bunker; a premiere review gave the season 4.5 out of five stars, and it was reported to be 96% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
Netflix added sitcom "Leanne" season 2, following Leanne Morgan's character navigating post-divorce life as her parents move in, with guest stars including Lainey Wilson, Jaime Pressly and Billy Gardell. Hulu's "Adults" returned for season 2, continuing to follow five roommates dealing with work, family and romantic complications. Peacock's "The Undeclared War" came back for season 2, centered on a mole hunt within Britain's GCHQ following a prior cyberattack crisis, with Simon Pegg reprising his role as Danny Patrick.
Other new titles include the German-language comedy "Back to the 90s" on Prime Video, about a boy band transported back to 1995; Peacock's horror film "The Woman in the Yard," starring Danielle Deadwyler as a mother confronted by a mysterious stranger in her yard; and "Hadestown: The Musical," now available to buy or rent on PVOD platforms like Amazon and Apple, featuring the show's original Broadway cast including Reeve Carney, Eva Noblezada, Patrick Page, Amber Gray and André De Shields.
